I thought it would be fun to see where everyones RPG experience began, and what everyones favorite RPG's are! So in your response, include the very FIRST RPG you ever played, and then list your top 5 favorite of all time :)

The first RPG I ever played waaaay back in the day was one called Telengard by Avalon Hill. I remember playing it on my dad's old Tandy Radio Shack computer in its full monochrome glory lol. It was a fun dungeon crawl full of monsters and loot. Although it may have been nothing too special, it definitely got me interested in RPG's and I owe it credit there!

It wasn't easy picking my five favorites of all time as there are many I loved throughout the years, but I believe I have narrowed it down! In no particular order....

    1) Pool of Radiance (NES port) - a very fulfilling RPG, with improved UI on the NES
    2) Ultima: Quest of the Avatar (NES port) - my first Ultima experience!
    3) Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark expansion - awesome RPG in my book
    4) Ultima VII: The Black Gate (Exult engine) - just wow
    5) Final Fantasy VII - perhaps trendy, but a classic

Another couple that deserve notable mention for me are Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) and Mass Effect. Outstanding games! Ok, I cheated and listed seven :D

Not counting Kings Quest and other such "adventure" games in the late 80s, first what I would call true RPG for me was U6.

    Favorites:
    1) Ultima 7 (and by extension Serpent Isle)
    2) Ultima Underworld II
    3) Ultima 6
    4) Ultima Underworld I
    5) Fallout

    1) Ultimas
    2) Daggerfall
    3) Journeyman Project - Legacy of Time
    4) Journeyman Project - Buried in Time
    5) Betrayal at Antares

Also love and adore Myst and Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete but they don't qualify as rpg. I intentionally left out the online games.

Forgot to add, my very first games I played outside of arcades were Pong (of course), and Space Invaders (forget the exact name, ships & meteors & such coming from above) and Hunt the Wumpus on a TI99-4a. :)

--Ultima Online had a wonderful sense of freedom. Our group could venture forth anywhere we wished, and take along guildmates no matter what their "level". The player to player interaction in UO to this day has never been surpassed. We even had an in game checkers tournament several time, using the mini game within UO.
    --I miss the camaraderie.
    --
--Star Wars Galaxies had the most interesting "Player City" aspect that I have never seen duplicated. I was the mayor of a city, Tuskn Flats, on Tatooine (near Fort Tuskan). The crafting aspect was outstanding as high level crafted items were NOT available from NPCs! Those who enjoyed the non-fighting aspects (dancing, crafting, medecine et al) had a full plate of enjoyable things to do......until SWG was murdered by its masters....
    --
World of Warcraft....The original was fun, and social. Before dungeons (instances) became groups of random strangers trying to "run and gun" their way through as fast as possible, there was a sense of adventure just getting to the dungeon location. Many of the dungeons our group had to do several times to get through.
--As WOW fell into a grindfest, I began to be sad at the waste of so much beautiful content. For example, Medivh's Castle (sp). I LOVED that place! My guild had to work very very hard to learn it and get through. After the next expansion, however, no one ever went there again. Similarly with the final Liche King Battle...I was sooo close to getting to the Liche King when the next expansion came out.....and peeps quit going there. Sigh.
    --
The Old Republic -- NPCs verbally talked; a nifty thing. The initial story lines for the character professions were outstanding, excellent, I really enjoyed them. But again, it dropped into the rut of grind grind, and random group with strangers to run and gun instances....and TOR had zero social aspects.

It truly is a difficult task to narrow it down to my top 5. Some of these straddle a couple different sub-genres and might be excluded if you draw lines in the sand. ;)

My first RPG that I can recall off the top of my head was Dragon Warrior on the NES.

    1. Ultima 7
    2. Jagged Alliance 2
    3. Wizardry 6
    4. Dragon Warrior 4
    5. Everquest (circa 1999)

First was Ultima III on the C64.

    Based purely on nostalgia.
    1. Ultima VI (Dos)
    2. Bard's Tale (Apple IIGS)
    3. Might and Magic IV-V (Xeen) (Dos)
    4. Dungeon Master (Amiga)
    5. Ultima VII: The Black Gate (Dos)
(Of course this is just the tip of the iceberg of the multitude that reside further down the list)

I'm going to have to list complete series as favorites because some of them have spanning stories that last more than one game.

Warhammer Online - even though it was a MMO it's whole experience was just incredible multiplayer RPG
Neverwinter Nights 1 - amazing story and visuals to match
Ultima 4 UO, UU1 - just complete legends of games for there times - you wanted to go find companions to make a party with. "join me!" ftw
Phantasy Star 2, 3 - amazing story and music makes them quite memorable as jrpgs
Witcher 1 - high quality game and the main character is very memorable and a very likable anti-hero type but the ending was a little weak
Lunar - Silver Star best game for SegaCD IMO - that Working Designs was so amazing I hope they re-release this so more people can enjoy it!
Diablo 1 - so awesome the originator of modern day MMO inventory style that so many games have copied

    - i tried to narrow it down more - :)

Same as my list only Bard's Tale would be last and Dungeon Master would be first.

For it's time it's an amazing game.
