Honestly I don't think this is nearly as big of a deal as people make it seem - The amount of "free skills" that you get at the beginning are next to meaningless in the scheme of things and the skill gains during the tutorial are minor comparatively.

The only downside is if you want to branch off from the defaults then you need to immediately see a trainer; which the quest line doesn't mention or lead you to in any organic way.

Perhaps one way to help smooth this over would be to add the following flow:

    1. Meet Arabella
    2. Get asked questions regarding your path
    3. Handed 300g to assist on your journey
    4. Introduce you to her friend who trains new adventures
    5. Buy 3 skills of your choice from the first Tier
    6. Escorted to the portal
    7. First quest - Select weapon from weapon rack

Then again that would toss out the whole idea they have built around the starting area so far - I can definitely see why people find it odd to be forced to make a choice of three options that directly link to a "class" yet the game touts a "classless" system, sort of counter-intuitive.

I tend to agree that the question is moot because changing your skills is so easy. However I earnestly wish that since I will NEVER use the blade tree I could remove those many blade glyphs from my deck list. At least give us the opportunity to clean up the deck UI or allow us to remove glyphs from the choice area if we are never going to use them.

    Aw shoot :(
I feel totally the other way, or maybe not - I feel your virtues (love, truth, courage) should not be automatically connected to your choice of weapons and skills, why would they be?
But I totally agree with Richard if he means that your virtues affect your character and which storyline you start with (but that sounds like it could be weapon-neutral).

    Thanks for replying Lum.
How does one make Richard hear a tiny whisper? I'll try @RichardGarriott
Perhaps he might have a moment to comment.

    I know this.
But it feels like a waste of time to be more or less forced into one starting location / quest tree just because you want to play a specific type of character and then run straight into another starting location half a world away.

This would be my preferred way as well.
I wonder why Richard doesn't like it.

What force you to stay as mage? I start as a ranger but when I find my first sword I switch to melee. Sure I have to invest a bit more gold at the beginning but noone is forcing you to use the given skills.

My problem isn't about switching at first chance... the first few skills levels are rather easy to get in fairly short order... my problem is the intro doesn't feel right forcing you into a 'class' based on just the three categories she asks you. They feel fine for picking your starting story line... but not you're preferred fighting style. I can only say it doesn't 'feel' right... I know you can switch and gain your desired skills very easily.

    I agree with cartodude.
Nothing is forcing me to stay as a ranger just because I turn out as Love'able in the initial dialogue - but it doesn't feel right that the game slaps predefined skills on me based on my "faith" / virtue.
After the virtue dialogue tree and the branching into Love, Courage, Truth - let us choose what fighting style we have in mind when we speak with Arabella and slap on a predefined skillpackage according to that choice instead.
    Peace :)

I think we all agree with you there. That's why we don't want the choice of story to select our skills.
