Need it be in a player-owned town, or a town that's been created by the devs? Or will there be places in the wilderness, off the beaten path, to place a house?

Sure there's an easy answer for this, looked around for a good while and couldn't figure it out. Thanks.

At present it must be in a town. Player owned or otherwise.

Dev town or player town. Not in the wilds.

8-Does anyone know if there are plans to sell - stand alone shops?

As far as I'm aware it's always been intended for you to use your homes for that. If you want a separate shop, buy another house and use it for that purpose. The end result is the same is it not?

So ..... hope there are enough spaces in dev towns. Don't like the idea of being in a player town and someone booting me because he doesn't like my Dodge up on blocks parked in the front yard.

Plus, seems like some player towns are already full, like Paxlair if I understand correctly.

Its more an aesthetics thing for me more than a house - in terms of design I guess

If there is enough demand it wouldn't be difficult to open a new town.. and remember that each episode will supposedly double the size of the world.. meaning that many more towns.

Yeah I'm just thinking about initial placement. Even if I was to have a knight-level benefactor pledge, there must be many hundreds of people who will place before I get my chance.

Would like something near a waterfall, on the coast, tree-lined with a mountain in back, quiet and peaceful, but with plenty of access to merchants and PvP. Is that too much to ask?

They said that there will 30% housing above established pledges - so there will be space, but maybe not your ideal spot

I thought the devs were still considering having some pre-built "wild" areas that could be claimed? That was the last thing I heard from them, but it's been awhile they may have said something more definitive or my memory may be wrong.

While I cannot say I have seen a hard number like 30% posted anywhere, I can point you to this post made by DarkStarr quite some time ago where he states they will have a significant number of lots available post launch. Lot Deeds: Never Oversold

Like Margard said, there will be plenty of housing, it just may not be exactly what you are looking for at first (depending on your selection criteria). As time goes on and new episodes are released, as players transition to and from player towns, plots tombstone due to inactivity, etc - I'm sure everyone is going to find one they are happy with.

That is what the current "player towns" are (like Valemark or Holtrot). Before houses are claimed the entire thing is wooded and "wild"

That's basically a town with no lots claimed. Think of it as a cross between a 'dev' town and player town. The idea was they could throw down a template town/hex that would only have maybe 1 or 2 NPC buildings and say.. 50 empty lots.. but only 30 lots could be claimed. That way they could use the same template and the layout would still differ from one to the other.

I suppose they could throw lots into some hexes unannounced, That would be fun.

Captain Jack remembers hearing that there should be some market places around, but doesn't know if you can buy a permanent stall in them. Probably not.

Also, there is a lot of ocean land. Who is to say that each ocean hex can't accomodate some islands capable of holding a house or holdfast. If the devs gave us ships for free and sold housing land and player towns on those hundreds of islands... they'd make up the cost of the ship goal and then some! Come on Devs, get your land rush on!
