Not sure I am understanding the issue.

Indexes are just short strings (usually numbers) to identify objects. Indexes are used for they are faster, and they can avoid duplicate errors (e.g. books with similar titles).
However if you want to have a handy description of the book in game, maybe a single sheet of paper near it will do. Ideally we should ask devs for bookcases, able to display a longer description (like a sheet of paper). And also able to hold the book, plus a couple of flyers and a cylinder.

    Something I've asked for:

    - Plaques. Bronze plaques, etc. like we saw in the single-player Ultimas to label displays. You could attach these on walls or other vertical surfaces like bookcases. Or they could be rotated the other way and attach them to the top of a horizontal surface. You would then define the text that would go on the plaque.

-Rotated sheets of paper that could be affixed to walls and other vertical surfaces.

This would help me with the library I'm building.

That's great, and likely easy to implement. We should keep asking devs about support of books in game.

Yes this is true, when a book is out in the open, you hover over it and you see the title as a tooltip. You can double-click the book to open and read it. However, on a vendor, you can only see the title listed. You can't double-click to read it. I actually like it this way. Womby and I put copies out on a table that people can peruse before they buy. The stories are also published on the forum. There may be situations, however, where you don't want people to have the whole contents before they buy.

For now, maybe we can start other threads about book topics, and we can keep this thread for the reservation of numbers. I see it getting quite long!

The problem I was getting at is systems like Dewey are useful as they appear on the outside of the book where they can easily be seen on the binding. The game has no way to include such a thing right now unless it's included in the title.. which is already too short for many books. If you put it on the inside of the book such as next to the NBBN.. the only way to see it is to open up the book itself.. which is useless to someone browsing in a library.

Not necessarily. The Dewey number of the book itself is really just helpful for shelving. Once it is in place, its a matter of the players being able to locate the shelf where the book resides. This is the biggest obstacle. Hanging plaques, or even notes nailed to the end of shelves, would help tremendously. Then the library just needs to have its own reference book(s) to list its catalog.

I didn't say it couldn't be useful to whomever is stocking the books.. but not to the visitor looking for that book. Which is why I suggested earlier the need for signs and indexes. Once you get to the shelf the book is on you can't see the number on the book itself.. so you're still left scanning all titles until you hit the one you want.

On a related note, is there a way to center text? BBCode for center doesn't seem to work, or is everyone using spaces?
