I've noticed that the devs have started putting in some generic scenes, like the grasslands. Rather than repeat these in hexes of similar appearance, there's a lot more they can do. This is just a start..

    Wildflower meadow.

    Alpine meadow.

    Heath.

    Swamp.

    Brush thicket.

    Brushland.

The majority of the overland map scenes I have seen so far have been very generic feeling and unoriginal. I strongly feel that the dual scale map and the overland hexes are by far the worst part of this game. I love SotA, but the map is unfathomably bad.

Could it be possible to have an "beach" instance

I would love to be able to run "barefoot" on the beach side ... maybe take a swim?

Possibly a bolder I can swim out to and fish?

Also a "cliff" overlooking the ocean - I'm thinking "Big Sur" for those that have been

Also - one of the coolest thing I saw on the coastline in San Francisco was a man fishing on a huge bolder ... that would be awesome. The bolder looked like this.

I additionally didn't add environments from biomes like Tundra, because I don't expect these in Ep. 1. But since Link brought it up, I thought I'd start adding them here.

    Shrubland.

Good job, redfish. If we had all those scenes with one or 2 variations, that would go a long way to making the game feel fun to explore.

You dont like that paper-like overland map? I love it!!
Or is it just the fact that when you walk onto the hexes there isn't much variety. Its all just the same old generic grass, trees, animals, dirt trail, blah blah blah... Yea I hear you, didnt take note of this myself. But im guessing that its all generic right now for a reason. Theres still a long ways to go till its all touched up and the icing on the cake is complete.

I think the problem lies in the confusion that the overland does not know what it it. Is is a map used for travel? Or is it a map waiting to be discovered and explored? Because whatever it is now, it is not fun, original, new, or innovative. It's just another boring overland map, that looks like it's from paper Mario.

    Hmmmm =(
I like the paper mario style map. And those clouds floating around are soo neat too! Made me think of zelda the windwaker.
So do you prefer to have it like UO was where there aren't hexes and as you walk out of owls head you just have the whole world open to you and you have to take the time to walk to different parts of the map? I guess I can see that many would rather do it this way..
Maybe its time to create an overland map poll, if one hasnt been started.

Redfish, you had me with you the moment you differentiated between bogs, fens, swamps and marshes. Anyone who knows their wetlands is good by me. :) But your point here is also valid, and I agree. We know there will be more variety, and while there will hundreds if not thousands of map hexes to fill, they will not all be unique. The time and budget will not allow for that. BUT, a little variety like you have outlined here, along with correct placement will go a long way toward making things feel realistic. Great thread.

I feel like helping to make scenes is something the community could really help with given the scene jams.
