Fun is not Portalariums first priority. They've stated that publicly.

Combine that with there being RL $$$ involved? It's not a game in the "you play games strictly for fun" sense of the word 'game', imo. And it never will be.

The best thing I like about Uo, was My account went up in value and I could sell In game item for real cash, that is something that candy land didn't offer. I didnt look at it as a game but an adventure.

I felt as if I was creating something from nothing that had real value. and the more I learn that Uo was taking that away the less I liked it. and Uo died because they flooded the market with bling bling to line there own pockets.

    That's not what they mean.

Making sure your stuff works before figuring out what is fun does not put "fun" at a lower priority.

    This quote is:
How is fun not the third step in the process, or the third priority, based on that? I mean, I get you're trying to be positive, but... ? o_O

Confession: I'm a whale. I spent over $1500 to get the Lord pledge and some add ons. I did so out of a sense of nostalgia and a weird sense of childhood loyalty towards Richard Garriott, simply because his games entertained me from my preteen years on up. I paid into this project specifically for the fact that there isn't supposed to be endgame "compete or be left behind" mentality that plagues MMOs. I don't have the time nor inclination for that sort of grind anymore because what results from that effort and repetition is a lot of "oh I put in that many hours this weekend and the item I wanted didn't drop... again!", the politics of who gets to raid and who sits it out, who is more "deserving" of loot, or "why can't this guild be as good as XYZ guild? Too many f*ckin' casuals in this guild!". It's all rubbish to me. Yet, I understand why people coming into this project would have those expectations to play in that style.

I read where folks call this a "walking simulator" or a "non-game"? Why can it not be a "character development simulator"? Or a "it's not the destination but the journey" game? That's how I'm approaching it. The way I'm playing it is that my character (Mikhail Kambrius) is a former physician from Earth who stumbled upon a lunar rift and is (to some degree of success) trying to resemble something of the druids from the Ultima single-player games, i.e. proficient in bow, polearm (I wish staves were polearms), nature magic, healing magic, and had the ability to tame wild animals. With the way the game mechanics are set up, that's a lot of grind and a lot of time to develop that character, and that's what my win is; not if I can best so-and-so or kill the strongest boss monster or have the shiniest loot.

I don't think of myself as a roleplayer, but I do want to engage in it as I develop my character with other players. In trying to balance time to work on my character, socializing opportunities do take a back seat unfortunately. I want to have something to fight for as well, e.g. the big evil sieges that were mentioned early in development. I would love to participate with others to protect a town or village that was threatened, because that becomes meaningful to my character and adds to my enjoyment. That would be a win for me as well if I could participate in those activities but they aren't in the game platform (yet?). Learning about this project as it unfolds and improves instead of relying on Google, wikis, or spoilers is just as fun for me because then I find myself surprised and intrigued by how I can use that knowledge for the betterment of my character and playstyle. I find I learn something new every time I sit down to play. I think there's value in that as well.

As an aside here, I do hate the way skills are offered by trainers through silly menus instead of a training quest or regimen. I am not crazy about the idea that many players have to deal with the tax system for their lots which provides an incentive to grind or walk away from the project altogether because it becomes a job for them. It isn't fair because it takes away from the fun they define for themselves, and I'm sympathetic to that sentiment.

As to the consequences that appear to be absent per the OP's point, should consequences for losing be implemented at this stage of the development? And what consequences are being sought here since PVP is apparently the only aspect of the project that can be described as a game element (per Mycello's post)? Is this another way of asking for full loot rules amongst consensual players? I don't have a problem with that, per se, but it would probably not push PVP play to the top of my priority list if implemented. I think those who want it should get it or at least be zones of differing risk if it's implemented.

Yep, I'm right there with you on everything. Problem is, people who don't enjoy this kind of thing are the ones calling it a 'walking simulator' or 'hugbox' (my favorite, wth?) and they simply look at the playstyle as pointless and a complete waste of time. Of course, we don't think so (nor care) but I'm not sure that's ever going to change. I just figure, meh, I guess I know who I will and won't most likely be playing with. These threads usually end up getting closed because there isn't a 'right' answer. We need more 'to each their own' and a lot less 'my way or the highway' players in my oh so humble opinion.

P.S. - Have you hugged anyone in game today? I haven't. *shrugs* Bad ********!

Work in progress death meaning something..

rage for losing one thins rage for being blatant deceived < and renaming that bag s exactly what happened. The bag was renamed and when listed all you saw was "artisan Tool Reward" this is deliberate fraud against almost the laws of every state and against the TOS / EULA. Is was don't to misinform a layer making it look like something it was not. They put tools in to make this more difficult, but it is doe the crime was committed and it was a crime.

Any actions taken to punish the criminal need to be harsh, effective and immediate, and since looking it appears to be useless account knowing how easy that is the Total ban is warranted.

Also going it again just to rub it in noses is also very disrespectful and snubbing your nose at the team, which is extremely unprofessional or ethical.

This whole long winded post is all a lead in to this one line - -
Which should have gotten it just plain attached t the other 18 page thread and locked, nothing new can be said, even throw a lot was said here not one think is different .

End result is OP does not think Ban Hammer was the right solution, sorry but it was for the player who did it.

This is totally the wrong thing to teach your kids...

Games are just that, Games... It doesn't matter who Wins or Losses, but How you played the game... Cheating is never acceptable, Violence should never be acceptable... Fans getting beaten until they're permanently crippled and their attackers sentenced to prison... A fan in San Francisco was murdered over a game... Soccer fans riot over losses or wins... Hockey fans riot and set their own towns a blaze...

Why would a Grown Up person want to talk/work out conflict with a miserable someone who gets a kick out of ruining the day of folks who have the bad luck of running into them or one of their scams. In games and sports, cheaters are penalized when caught, in SotA sometimes the Ban Hammer is needed.

I will tell you. We got soft as men. We have a generation of people who think they are entitled to everything and believe that there are no winners or losers. We live in the land of the "make believe bubble" but it will burst someday. Cause life is winners or losers, not make belief. Just saying. Now they punish people for winning and reward for losing. does not make much sense really.

No they punish criminal who commit crimes and fraud is a crime, not way to validate / substantiate it. What was done was criminal, not in a "game" text - real world what we have is people who want to let criminals have rights, much more than commit the crime do the time. It is not about feeling entitled other than a criminal feeling he deserves less punishment.

Never quite understood this sentiment, actually. I completely disagree. What does this mean for you, exactly?

Not sure why you quote me then. As i am saying basically the same.

They main difference i have with all of you - for me this Game is never ever a believable medieval setting if players can't play the role if a bad person.

    Nice post.

I believe a Human is always a more interesting counterpart then a NPC.

Jump on a rock - Wolfs do not get up there - shoot them.

    This is not Gaming.

You talked about the Towns being artacked and the need to defend them.

Did any of you play Dark Age of Camelot.

All you mentioned what you like was there but under the umbrella of a big "Game".

It was clear - you are part of a Group. Not even a need to join a Guild.

I could socialise, join events and all what you love in SotA.

But the purpose if why thus is called a Game was clear.

My Realm vs the other Realm. Who dominates the Main Combat Zone and Steals both relics of the other castles us the winner.

That was a Multiplayer with a clear Message that Gaming is the main purpose.

And i do not see any difference between the other Realm as a Opponent trying to overcome me or the Gamer playing in a setting a Role of a Thief, Murderer that us trying to stop me from delievering save my wood to the crafting station.

Both times a Game us being played.

And even the Merchant who tricks me with a false description of a Item is a Game for me. Because it is done during me playing a Game in a medieval setting with the sword the only law.

    But lets leave it.

It is a basic discrepancy i notice of understanding.

    We will not overcome.

If it's a crashy/buggy mess, it'll be more difficult to find the fun. I think this quote was from a project management standpoint, not a goals/desires one.

It is just something I feel. No offense intended. Basically what I mean is we have in general gotten soft as traditional men. We have lost our identity. I understand its not in line with the current thinking or the current trends. Consider me a throwback to when men where masculine. I am not suggesting that you are or are not masculine, I am generalizing of course.

Comments like this are all about the same thing a player Scammed other players, he did not trick, he did not deceive, he did nothing but blatantly commit fraud by renaming an item to appear to be something it was not, EXACTLY NAMED THE ITEM - to appear to be what is was not. This is the problem, not one person thinks GAME PLAY as a bad person is bad, but to COMMIT FRAUD, is bad. there is a difference and every single one of you who thinks what happened is anything but EXPLICIT FRAUD, does not have a grasp, nor do you accept how bad it really is.

You can all think anything you like - Port has clearly said what is was, and it was FRAUDULANT, not trickery, not slight of hand - IT WAS FRAUD.

The players committing it in the future will be dealt with harshly as they should be, this post can not do anything to change what happened and any more trying to validate, make the frauds actions partly legitimate, or anything else other than just leaving it as it is, is a waste of time and effort.

The naming of the bag was FRAUD, illegal, against EULA, and TOS.

Peace out I will not come back to this thread or any others on the topic.

The horse is bleeding out, let it die in peace.

Right, that's something I can't ascribe to. From my experience, it's usually macho guys who can't adapt to an evolving society. They need something to make themselves feel validated and that their way of being a man is the 'right' way. I'm not saying you as well, also a generalization. I look back at like the 50's when guys were supposed to be emotionless rocks coming home every night expecting the wife to have dinner on the table. Times change, can't really go backwards. I mean, hell, I'd love for Metallica and Megadeth and whatnot to be like they were, I was a metal head (in a band in my 20s about 6 years, bass/vocals). I still am but times have definitely changed musically and I've broadened musically as well. My parents were a lot older than my friends' parents; dad was in WWII. I'm familiar with traditional roles and he was a great guy. However, I was the last of 6 and I'm definitely the most non-traditional out of all of us and I'm really glad for it. I'm very open minded and accepting so yeah, I don't fare well on forums usually as a result. LOL.
