I understand that this is not exactly the same as a traditional pre-order, but people aren't "donating" large chunks of money to Portalarium out of the goodness of their hearts. Most people are giving money specifically because of the rewards and I think it is just semantics to call that a pledge instead of a pre-order. The expectation of someone who pledges to SotA is that they are pre-ordering the items in their reward tier.

Nope... I didn't take it as a pre-order. I assure you 100% I did the pledge with the intent of getting an exclusive item in game that said "I supported" because I wanted to be able to say "Look, this game that revolutionized the industry of online gameplay... yeah I was part of that... here's my proof."

Just wanted to be clear it's not for the goodness of our hearts... we want the game. The items say that we paid early to support... I think that PBS example is perfect and is the best example that I've seen yet. The only issue I have is the bait-switch feel I have on lot placement order... but then again if they do nothing about it I'm still going to be happy.

The pledges are a bit different, but the add-on items are exactly the same as a pre-order. Still, letting later pledges get more bang for their buck than early ones is a bad idea for getting people to pledge.

But how is that really any different than a typical pre-order bonus?

"Pre-order our game to receive an exclusive blue koala bear pet."

They did. Last number I heard was 14k in one day or something. The problem is that while it may have brought in new potatoes and squeezed more out of the existing turnips, it does leave a sour taste in the mouth of faithful carrots from early on. Bad PR is bad PR. It adds up. One thing I have noticed is that Portalarium often makes decisions without exactly thinking them all the way through or properly giving them the once-over. For example, the Lighthouses that were promised to be attached to your house at the Knight level are now no longer attached to your house. It's either-or. The prologue of The Blade of the Avatar was wrought full of typos and poor grammar.

You might be right. You might be wrong. I'd have to look at the KS videos, especially the 24 hour one to find where it was first suggested. If the issue isn't what was promised, it's the other issue I see a lot, and that's communication. There was so much ambiguity in the waterfront details that Starr had to chime in.

While I think it was a reasonable change, it seems clear that it was an addition at first. From the KS site reward descriptions:
It's not totally 100% clear, but that it's an OPTION if you have a waterfront property definitely implies that you could also have the property without one. Sadly unless you translate it all into lawyer speak there will often be ambiguity in these statements.

Again it's a more reasonable change and has also been beaten to death. But you should also remember that a LOT of the stuff that has been communicated has been in videos which are VERY hard to search and I don't think all of them are even posted. You can see most of the KS ones are dated May 2nd since it took them a while to get them up, and I think a few may have been lost. So asking for a a link to where we heard it when most of the KS backers remember it may not be a reasonable request.

I would hope Founders at each level get priority over those that pledged later. (ex Edelmann Founders > Edelmann Benefactors > Edelmann whatever). That seems just for those people that supported LB early on. It's going to be bad enough those that "chose" to wait until this "pledge drive sale" will be at a higher priority level, because of their 15% boost to those of us that pledged in the past couple months. I don't know how bad the land rush will be but just thrills me thinking anyone that pledge during this sale is going to be 15% ahead of where I am because they CHOSE to join later! Apparently that is FAIR in many SoTA supports eyes, which I don't understand at all. People keep comparing it to RL sale items. As for the comparison to supporting PBS, well you know what, if you gave PBS $200 which included a CD, and an hour later they said two CD's and a coffee mug, IF you called them, they'd make it right. Why? They are dependent on the goodwill and support of the people that donate/support them.

I haven't seen anything from the dev team regarding the original OP's legitimate question.

As someone else mentioned if this was like Star Citizen where you could 'melt down' your "pledge" and re-allocate, that would be a great ideat too. But then again SC while it runs sales, still rewards the early supports over those that chose to wait. People that CHOSE to wait and join can't get LTI (lifetime insurance on their ship), only those that pledged early. They can buy the same package, maybe get it on a special at a discount, but they still do NOT get the LTI. Only early backers could still get it through this weekend. In a game were loss means something, that is huge.

That's the difference. Those that pledge/supported early in Star Citizne, are getting better perks - as they should IMHO.

This teaches me with SoTA, waiting will reward you. Not leaving a warm-fuzzy for me at the moment. I can appreciate trying to drum up business with a 15% bonus to new people. But word of mouth and your credibility in sales is everything. It's a bit shaky at the moment with me.

If you're upset and if you can't get a refund tell them to transfer your pledge over to User ID: 1434 and that will solve your problem. User ID: 1434 is equivlant to /dev/null it's just a way to make your stuff disappear. Really I mean it. But make sure it goes only to User ID: 1434 because it is one of those magic numbers, if you don't send it there you will still get those nasty email reminders about the game and stuff. Sending it to that User ID: 1434 will solve all your problems I mean it! ;)

The funding opportunity with Black Friday/Cyber Monday is obviously too lucrative for Portalarium to not join in.

I don't get what you're all complaining about, everyone decides for themselves at the moment of pledging whether or not they're satisfied with how much they're supporting the game and what they're being promised in exchange.

If all of a sudden this was "all future pledges get 15% more value than earlier backers" then yeah, there would be a huge problem, but I'm not gonna get upset over a Black Friday sale.

That's it. I went to Outback Steakhouse last week, and this past Friday they had a 10% off the same steak dinner I purchased. I am picketing outside their restaurant right now, demanding $20 back or a basket of free buttered rolls. I too am a socialist at heart.

The difference is that you enjoyed the food last week.

We're still waiting for most of everything from our pledge rewards, hence the comparison to the pre-order process.

Add-ons have never counted toward your lot selection priority, only the date of your initial pledge and how much money you have pledged at your tier. Now, of course, the developers are free to change their policy prior to the start of the actual lot selection process, but I doubt that is going to happen o_O

The only exception I can remember to add-ons not counting toward your pledge total is the Hearth of Britannia Telethon special item. That one did count toward your tier, and therefore probably does count toward lot selection as well.

A lot of people buy stock on the stockmarket, but some people buy that same exact stock for cheaper than some other people did at another time. This isn't much different than the stock market. Whatever we pledged to get our goodies (high or low) it could all end up being for nothing if the game doesn't succeed. So we are all taking a risk. it is possible (improbable), but possible that none of us will ever get to reap the benifits of our rewards as we liked to.
