I wouldn't be so sure about that, since UO was an initial success mostly due to Ultima fans. So lots of UO fans was and is still Ultima fans. Especially the older they get, and they get quite old here in SotA...
    https://www.shroudoftheavatar.com/f...yones-age-group-the-majority-rules-game.9171/
In limited votes it also seems that people are pretty much 50/50 on the issue, but that is not a safe sample of any kind...
    https://www.shroudoftheavatar.com/f...efers-u9-to-uo-_-with-poll.14691/#post-249701
You can also see that sales of the Ultima Series on GoG widely eclipses UO subs nowadays.
However that is neither a very good market sample.

What can be said though is that the higher investment, the more likely that you are dealing with a ultima series player and the lower investments are from UO players. Simply as a derative from their age and available income.

Actually sales of subs continued to rise when seperating PvP players to their own shards.
So the commercial factor back then was the reverse of what you are saying. There was a large target audience that didn't want to share space with the PvPers.
However the lasting power of those shards show that PvPers keep coming back for UO. So there is some kind of loyal crowd out there.

Now where I think poratlarium has been smart is trying to unite all the player base into one concept the SMO. That means that players who remember the pre-trammel UO will still get a similar feel although not the same, while players who remember the ultima series, or prefered UO trammel etc.
Can all share one community and one world.
It even lets people partake in both, try a bit of PVE , move to PvP, play a little house, test out single player, then back again... etc

Yes the results seem to show a greater interest in the Ultima Online options rather than single player. Just the same, Captain Jack notices much more talk from the community and effort from the Devs focused on that area and gameplay features related to.

I did a quick search for poll and sota and came across this one by who's name has been stricken from history:
    https://www.shroudoftheavatar.com/forum/index.php?threads/poll-sota-or-uo2-which-do-you-want.7448/

Earlier, it appears that this was not the case. It was over 2:1 as a result at the time for what I am guessing is not an Ultima Online type revival and for a new game going by the thread.

Well I can honestly say that I do not share your opinions....I think ever. I'm glad these thoughts aren't driving the development of this game.

The aggro and entitlement displayed by some of the self proclaimed PVPers is very much why I prefer consensual PVP.

So you think I'm your lesser because I don't share your interest? And you are a mighty hero because you can control a collection of pixels and slay other players represented as collections of pixel with a sword based on a collection of pixels? There is enough evil in the real world recently, become a soldier and defend the democratic way of life if you really are such a true and mighty hero. If not - no problem. SotA has the game mechanics and is big enough to satisfy all kind of preferences and players. You are able to play PvP with people who want to play PvP, don't try to force other people into your favorite game style!

But seriously, players should have a choice, as lame as the alternative might sound either way

    o pla
i know you and some other backers not enjoy pvp but it would effect you guys aswell, every single crafter

first off a system without full loot make pvp havy unbalanced !!!! a game where you get sets from dungeon withoput loot is mostly an unbalanced arena type pvp game , where people with most time have the most advantage which make pvp horrible.
+ i hate bot spammers all those non loot pvp games have players who abuse this , not to play the game but to make money with boted gold !!!!

pvp in age of conan/archage for excemple. you made a break of 2 month and everyone had a better gearset and u had no chance because they already made the higher tier dungeons , if you once manage to kill someone you cant loot him and he remains op :( this is a system all people with a real life cant enjoy in pvp.
no matter if you die a lot or if you are good in pvp , it is just more fun to not get forced to do pve but do what you enjoy to do, give us freedom !!! i rather prefer farming some hours materials or ore for armors instead of grinding 2 weeks for a stupid helmet i cant loose
+ a player driven economy can never exist (only professions like cooks and alchemist can be viable because he sell consumeables) armorcrafter and weaponsmiths will be useless , who buy there stuff if you dont loose it.

i want to have a game where it is possible to live and make money by only playing a miner/smith/gambler/trader to get rich, dont like that you are forced to do pve to get rich or pvp

when you can do that , you dont have to care about being murdered because you can hire guys protecting you. or you can spend money on a siege if there are grifers you want to eliminate.

i could see some people would get interested in this game if you can live as a crafter + when they would add gambling it could be really fun to live in town so you dont care about pvp outside the walls , if you have lag because your girl is steaming a film or whatever.

ultima never had gambling only the uo freeshard defiance when i remember right.

would be so much fun if you could run a buisness like a casino, where some of the gambeled wins go to the owner.

or a house of plessure where you could refill your hp panalty if you die. this could act as guild tax.

buy some slave whore npcs from the unguarded city slavemarket. place them in your house of plessure and the town and your guild wontz have to pay guild tax in an annoying way it is handeled in other mmos. when you die and you refill your peneltys your guild get money so it is not wasted

when your keep falls the house of plessure go to the new owner of the keep or some of the wins go to them the owner had ,same for the casino, keep owners should be able to increase tax on houses. something like that would give pvp a sense . if taxes are too high a siege will happen

or that it make sense to run a vendor also require loot , or you wont sell other stuff then consumeables

i can only see this game would be fun if pve flagged players and pve flagged players are separated and cant trade suff you can use for pvp

my idea was farmed resorces in pvp land are unflagged , all resorces gathered in pve land will get flagged as (only pve) they have defencive stats for pve but cant be used in pvp.

so pvp guilds cant farm there stuff save in trammel or bot it there and come back to felluca and ruin the economy

all of this talk on consensual pvp is a waste, its been hashed out over and over!
If you pick PVP then you can fight others that also picked PVP, if your opponent is "take one item PVP" and you are full pvp, it should drop to the lowest form of PVP "take one item for both fighters, if its full loot pvp and both have picked it then make it full loot! There are additions to the economy with pvp (especially if armor & weapons need repaired now) im going to have to get tools and ingots to repair my armor and i could buy them from you, or NPCs.
Same with armor and weapons! when it gets damaged it will have to be replaced and that should cost something dropping more gold into the economy.
People will argue that, but the facts are there, we will need to buy repairs, armor, weapons, why not let the crafters craft nice stuff or magical stuff, and sell them!
I dont want it to be even for everyone across the board! if im a swordsman my specialty is fighting with swords and it should be that, i should be able to do minor repairs, but i should not be as good as a crafter if that is what he does!
I dont understand the designers or people on the forums when you say its not economically good for the game, if your a no pvp and a crafter you can still make money from your wares, when i as a PVPr come to you to buy it!
I dont think its very much fun when everyone is the same, people should be individually special across the board! If i need potions, i go to a mage/alchemist that makes them, im quite sure health potions will be in demand for fighters and mana potions for magic users! but lets all have a special place in this game! This kind of reminds me of the movie "Pink Floyd, The wall" and the classroom setting where everyone is the same ITS BORING!!!!

You have framed everything into this "If it's not UO then it's WoW" type of rant.

This is not the case. Do yourself a favor and forget your fears of WoW, stop imposing that fear onto what you think SotA is or is not. Do a little reading or wait and see but things are not in a horrible state for PvP.

EVE have completely player driven economy and it works really good! But more important: You do know there will de durability and it will be harder and harder to repair your equipment and therefore increase repair cost so after some time you will be more or less forced to buy new equipment? So armourer and weaponsmith will indeed be useful.

ok when he can repair stuff with ingots he can be useful , but why not use the ingots to craft a new weapon and reward the winner with your sword

As I said at one point the repair will be more expensive that buying a new weapon so it will be both repair AND new production.

Full loot or not, that is nothing that will change anything for crafters. With full loot will the one that just looted some equipment will use it or SELL it. Since the mount of equipment are the same in both cases the only thing that are different from a crafters perspective are who the buyer is.

Possibly. And it would seem to be that RG is indeed comfirming that UO had the larger player base, which granted isn't quite the same as a fan base...though obviously the two overlap.

Too, we need to consider certain other questions: do these statements account for people buying multiple copies of the game (and multiple subscriptions thereto)? Are sales of expansions lumped in with the "two years later" sum? Do the statements account for the fact that in its open PvP days, the game was losing accounts almost as quickly as new people were registering accounts?

I should take another look in my archives, see if I can find any sales spreadsheets from that era.

I'm neither interested in PvP nor in crafting. Maybe you are thinking too much in terms of UO :) But SotA is distinguished from UO, it offers more opportunities than a pure sandbox game like UO because the game is telling a story. I will just detect New Britannia and follow the story, playing alone or together with some friends. And when I've finished the story I'll wait for the next part of SotA. I need no second life as a crafter for other people - my job in RL is more than enough :D No offense, tastes are just different. And as I've said already - SotA has the game mechanics and is big enough to satisfy all kind of preferences and players.

Ultima had gambling as far back ultima 3 I believe, what is this tomfoolary;)

Well said Sir Cabirus, I think that is exactly why these conversations keep going round and round....people want to look back at UO and state why something will or won't work....when in reality that isn't how this game will be setup...

The most major feature overlooked is that this game will have an over all storyline.

I believe that if a new single player Ultima would be announced with state of the art graphics, interesting gameplay mechanics and an interesting story, the game would sell millions of copies.
Imagine a new Ultima similar to Skyrim (just better of course). Skyrim sold over 20 million copies. Ultima Online - although maybe more successful than the other Ultimas - does not come near that number.
Why? The number of gamers increased. During the times of the "old" Ultimas there simply were not as many gamers around. The market grew and so did the number of gamers. Therefore Ultima Online naturally did have more players than the other Ultimas. But if a new Ultima with modern graphics would be announced this game would have even more players.
So you cannot say that Ultima Online is the definite Ultima because it had more players than the single player Ultimas. It just had more players because the player base was bigger at that time.
