Exactly, it just selects the numbers of people you will see. From zero in offline to 50-60 in OPO. But does it really allow for different play styles or just playmates.

Tactics has everything to do with it. Risk v reward applies to both sides. For the PK, if the miner is foolish enough to naked mine in a high threat area, he has low risk/high reward, so of course, he is motivated to kill the miner.

The miner on the other hand is in a high risk area. Is the ore being mined worth the risk? That is his risk/reward calculation, not whether he stands to gain if the PK attacks him.

If the gain is worth the risk, then maybe he has chosen wisely. If not, then he needs to either decrease his risk (mine somewhere else), or increase the risk to the PK, making himself a less attractive target.

That's where tactics come in. Make yourself more dangerous, or bring an escort.

Have we reached the point in technology where AI has surpassed human intelligence and adaptability?
edit: Terathan keep was scary for me and a rush the first couple times, until I learned where to stand safely. But as soon as I was there and Reds showed up, that's when my heart really pumped.
Then add to that all the same monsters that everyone else sees and guilds and factions. Plus the uncertainty is the good part. The thrill.(For some)
PvErs Min Max as much as PvPers do.. Nothing wrong with that. Wherever you see any kind of competition, there is min maxing.. It's normal. You want to win. Otherwise, why compete.

As long as the amount of skills we can learn and use at once are balanced, we will only be able to min max within the skills we choose.. Normal.
As long as the Devs to a good job of balancing all the skills, people will still choose all the different possible skills and create all kinds of unique combos because all skills will be useful but not all of them will be able to be learned by one person at once.

I think the reward is having a realistic world with no invisible forces. Well balanced for all.

And yes, it is easy to imagine many cool PvE scenes, but if you add PvP to that exact same scene, you get more risk.

It seemed to me what you said implied baited expectations - rather than misplaced ones. If that's not what you meant then I obviously misconstrued.

I agree that some directions weren't clear or even defined but it was an even playing field from the beginning as far as expectations go. Obviously one of the risks of crowd funding is the project not turn out exactly as one desires. That's just how this project is.

I want an open-pvp option - but I'm not necessarily here for one. I pledged based on what limited info I did have at the time which didn't lead me to believe it was going to be anything more than an add-on feature at best in March 2013. I haven't seen anything official or confirmed that changes that in the interim either.

The people that seem to air the most disappointment or feelings about being cheated also appear to be inflexible and the most ill-informed about the project.

For the rest let's just keep talking and expressing desire for it. The dev team is listening.

An important point is that we should not see PvE players when a character is in Full PvP Mode.

    Nothing complicated.

I can agree with that, but to a point: towns. I think as soon as we put that restriction on and apply it to towns you're just going to have people straddling modes for commerce and we either live with the economies being tied either way or we're going to have to force a choice on somebody when they create a character and made them swallow it.

Not saying I was cheated or mislead. I just think communicating the objectives of development ,to the backers, could have been handled better.

However, kickstarter projects are a new frontier and everyone, including RG, can get caught up in the excitement it brings. I do not blame the process, but 10 months post, I expect some resolution to the issues and and an improvement in communicating to the backers.

We need more focus and direct answers.

    @Gunga Din

No and I didn't think you were. And to be certain I wasn't speaking of you personally; or anyone else here on these forums that can discuss the matter objectively.

My beef is with the notion others may have that RG is a one trick pony and that he was making Ultima Online 2014 and just wasn't legally allowed to call it that. Which admittedly might be more based on personal experience rather than what I quoted from you.

    why not have it all.
If there are enough protected zones, not protected by invisible forces but protected by justified IN WORLD NPCs, guards, legionaires, private mining or forresting companies who control quarries and forests, Tribal folk who protect their forests etc.., Murder hunters, etc.. etc.. etc.. Heck, you could invent a monster type who spawn to only attack and punish murderous souls and drop no loot... n other possibilities)
Then you end up with, fully protected hexes,
    Semi protected hexes,
    Unprotected hexes.
Everyone gets access to every hex, Each hex set has it's varying degree of risk. No hex type has a certain resource exclusive to it.
Some dungeons could have guards at the entrance or some holding on to a tiny outpost inside..
    Some dungeons could be guardless.

This makes the world more realistic. Protected by it's NPCs and not invisible forces.
If players want to access the more dangerous zones, they can do so in groups. This leads to more interesting game play as well imo.

Balance the world! don't restrict it.

...and I have to respectfully disagree with this being an adequate compromise, as it sacrifices the immersiveness SotA is allegedly trying to create.

This would be adding punitive rules on a system that if done correctly (via what many of us thought the slider system was supposed to do) would not need those restrictions.

Many of the people advocating the addition of a Multiplayer Online - Open PvP mode are not pvpers themselves, but want to play in the open-world immersiveness that drew them to Ultima Online (do anything, interact with anything you see etc). This includes the ability to attack anyone, and the freedom to loot anything they may have on them within that immersiveness. Having arbitrary 'magic' barriers preventing someone from doing something, such as in the suggestion proposed by Darkstarr on looting, is an immersion killer.

Players who do not want to be subjected to open PvP/full looting have their play style already protected by the assurance that PvP is optional in the existing Multiplayer Online mode. Those that do not want to participate in PvP are not forced to do so. I see no reason why additional restrictions are needed on those that do participate then.

@Akeashar, you listed PvP as your top choice for what you are least interested in SotA in this thread:

    https://www.shroudoftheavatar.com/forum/index.php?threads/what-sota-features-are-most-and-least-important-to-you.7374/page-2

I'm curious, would adding more restrictions and rules to PvP change its ranking on your list? Or are you perhaps not at all interested in PvP? If the latter, it makes me wonder what your intentions are in these threads, if you have no desire to participate in PvP in the first place. Your play style is protected and already assured by Portalarium. Let us try to have ours as well.

You could have individual play styles affect who is slotted to go into a hex (like they said they were going to do anyway).

For example, if I never steal from someone or loot from a recent corpse, I will most likely not see a thief in my hexes - but there is always a small chance I could...

[quoti="Gunga Din, post: 132514, member: 6440"]The other thing people have to remember, our community is not full of 12 yr old Pew Pew kids. Most of the community is well educated, mature, have families etc.

The world some fear from 1997 will never hit that harshness now, considering the community we will attract.

If any community can run a fulfilling open world , this one can. I have no doubt. Respect will be shown and we will police that type of world accordingly.

There will be those who will prey on the weak , but we will also have many to defend them.

You understand what i'm saying? The griefing will never hit a level close to UO 1997 or Darkfall etc.[/quote]
This Is so true and lets remember kids that being a pk is hard very hard so you dont see many of them. I thought this game was gonna prove that but now it looks like its not haha im very very disappointed. I dont even pk.. nor even pvp that much.. but I loved trying to hire ppl for protection n the thrill of discovering new routes to citys where pkers arnt likely to know.. n the list goes on with stuff open pvp adds... full loot... maybe not full but maybe half loot or something like that.. n how great was it to get attacked by a pk and you end up killing them.. you guys dont even know what your missing.. like I said im disappointed n im not gonna play or donate anymore.. maybe the devs will meet us half way from where fhey are now.. people would be happy with that. Good luck.. but im done adiós

I would n alot of people would be happy with that.. gold n resources would be only thing you can loot. N agian agian agian for all you people who think open pvp is a bunch of pkers running around youre wrong its rare cuz its hard being a pk theres harsh penaltys. But you guys got what you wanted another western sandbox.. eastern countries laugh at us but there games are getting bigger over here like archeqge and stuff.. so i just hoppe sota doesnt fail now ..best of luck.. lord brit I still respect you for your uo days and truly think you wanted open pvp but got pushed away from the idea...im not even a hard pvp and remember what this all brought to the game.. im crying in reallife I was excited.. lol

Please tell me how much you have donated sense you have just joined SotA today. Kind of funny how you are so quick to throw in the towel seeing how you JUST placed your first donation today. (if it is true at all)

You mean that long-running, well-reviewed, highly successful, super profitable game that any company would drool to be half as successful as? Yeah, it would stink to be that. :)

And I agree with most of the people who aren't interested in PvP: If there is a PvP mode where PvPers can have at it and I don't have to be involved, all the better. I hope the system supports as many consensual play styles as possible.

I had nothing to talk about until today and some of it I didnt even bring up.. like the fact that when I donated I was lead to believe it was the successor of uo.. I was told that on a UO shard by black n brit.. look on youtube they came to a full pvp shard and talked about the game.. why would they do that knowing people would tjink it was a better looking UO.. especially after they say successor to uo.. they did not go on the tram non full pvp shards and say this they went on the two most populated full pvp shards and said this so dont tell me they werent trying to kinda , ake us think it was gonna be full pvp maybe half loot .. shhhhh now
