Slightly disappointed you cannot disable. Slightly concerned if 4 seconds is sufficient time to read them. Yes I know that makes my feedback seem bipolar, but c'est la vie. Very eager to see how it works when live. Thanks for trying to improve the start of the game for new people.

    @Lum

Edvard needs love! I think it may be time for Edvard to get an overhual visualy. He is the second person you meet and needs to be looking sharp as well. These are opportunities to impress new players, give him a little flair as a bard/scholar. Pretty short list of npc types if edvard is also the arms merchant in soltown and vendors and many merchants.

I think most the solace bridge > soltown npcs need some attention in this regard, gotta start somewhere. Like give the guard you meet a captin badge and so forth. :)

hmm maybe ill sketch up some concepts :p

You will be seeing new NPC variants very soon (not soon enough!) but right now like every other NPC the current Edvard is using placeholder art.

When Edvard gets the new look, will he respond to "Edvard you look different... did you lose weight?"? And what fantastic response will @Lum sneak in? [In his spare time, which is likely none from what I hear].

I think the onscreen hints will be pretty helpful for new players, this is something I've wanted to see for awhile. It's sometimes difficult to figure out what's going on in the chat window. Especially for folks with bad eye sight.

Another thing - if the in-game Hints are left in the game it would be nice if there was a way to see 'recent hints' .. not entirely sure how you would go about it. This way if you close one of them, at least you'll be able to see the hint you closed out of habit and read it later.

I'm not entirely convinced she's a kid. I keep thinking about this little vampire "kid" having her way with New Orleans

This sounds very interesting. I'm looking forward to try this out.
I have to say the floating text for the tutorial looks good. Getting rid of windows is a good thing.
I have to say the floating text even looks so good that I would love to see this for the dialogues with NPCs instead of the IRC chat window...

Floating text in U7 was often hard to read depending on the background of the game at the time. Windows may seem artificial, but they reduce eye strain and help make something readable.

I agree, the only thing is, if I read what @Lum said (somewhere) the text will be on a timer and display for 4 seconds. IF I got that right, I'd hope they give us a control to set the timer length, hell in less than 4 seconds I can totally forget why I'm in a room let alone read something I'm supposed to retain :)

Not if the dialogues are presented the way they are now. This simply destroys any atmosphere.
The floating text may have its problems but it would be a million times better than the IRC chat window.
I am very excited - and a bit sceptical - about how the devs plan to present the NPC conversations in the game in their final form.

He also said "We'll instead have context-sensitive hints, of no more than a line or two, that appear onscreen when necessary. (These also go to your chat window as a system message in case you miss them.)" so that helps ....

I don't get it. Everyone is so excited about these changes. I know Solace was terrible, but there is more than one way to skin a cat. If I read @Lum post closely it looks like he was upstaged by these changes. I would like to know what the alternative Solace build would be (at least in his mind).

What? Not at all. Everything you see was originally either my idea or @RichardGarriott 's (he went back and forth with me on a lot of this iteratively) and I'm really happy with how it turned out. We'll go through the same process with Blood River next release.

@Lum. Sorry, I got confused with the parenthetical Attenwood statement. Did not mean to cast aspersions on your OP.
