    For those interested, my former instructor:

    Maitre Paul Geraci is an A-rated epee fencer and a Maitre d’ Epee–a title awarded him in August 2012 from the United States Fencing Coaches Association. Paul’s family sports a pedigree of fencing masters beginning in Sicily generations ago. (Bio compliments of River City Fencing)

    Per the USFCA's website: Fencing Master (or Maître) is the highest level of accreditation. Masters are capable of teaching fencers from beginners to high-level competitive champions. Masters can also train other coaches to become Prévôts or Masters. This certification requires a passing the Prévôt written test, a written thesis and a comprehensive practical and oral examination given by a certified board of three USFCA fencing masters. A coach can be certified as a Master in an individual weapon (e.g. Master of Foil, Master of Saber), or can be certified in all three weapons (Master of Arms or Maitre d'Armes). Each weapon is tested separately.

    Impressive credentials indeed! I would imagine it takes a long time to be certified a Master in an individual weapon...time which Starr does not have...

    Indeed it does. I helped Paul study for his Prévôt test back during college. It was more than five years later before he got his Master status.

    Can Starr call a second?

    In some duels, the seconds would take the place of the primary dueller if the primary was not able to finish the duel. This was usually done in duels with swords, where one's expertise was sometimes limited. The second would also act as a witness http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duel
