Release 143 goes live October 27th at 10:30 AM CDT.

Welcome! The Catnip Games development team marks this monthly release of Shroud of the Avatar with new content and improvements. For Release 143 (R143), we offer items meant to display people and …not people.

For those wishing to participate in any community activities, upcoming one-time and recurring community events have been announced! Be sure to also review the Player Guide and Known Issues for additional information on recent changes and upcoming fixes.

Doll Display Prisons Cases and Ultra-Rares

It’s that time again! We have a new set of Ultra-Rare items that we will be giving to players who purchase a 10K or 6K COTO pack on the website from October 27th through November 6th.

Receive a Haunted Jackalope Doll with each purchase of a 10K COTO pack and get a Haunted Voodoo Doll with each purchase of a 6K COTO pack. The bonus items will arrive closer to Release 144. To qualify, be sure to make your purchases before the end of November 6th!

What’s that? Wish there was a way to safely display all these haunted dolls? Glad you asked! Our craftspeople have painstakingly created a set of Doll Display Cabinets for just this purpose!

There will be two versions: a Macabre Doll Display Case (a case as dark as the dolls it is intended to house!) and a Fancy Display Case made from the finest wood in Novia. These cases have protections to ensure that those haunted rascals fail any attempt to escape: they will be using the fishtank tech, allowing the player to place any one of the in-game dolls for display.

As we add more dolls to the game, players will be able to use these cabinets to proudly show off which ones they have (haunted or otherwise.) The exact set of features will be detailed when they are released: Xolavar has been tasked with installing the final bells and whistles mainly to strengthen the wards, but also to provide some interesting features.

The Doll Display Cases have arrived just in time too! I believe we have corrected audio issues with the seven pre-existing haunted dolls as well as improved their triggers and grab-ability. Some of the haunted dolls may have different sounds and/or animations as well. Who’s to say?

You have other things to display? There is a third (unlocked) display case that will allow for placement of whatever can be fit into the case. All three of these Display Cases will be in the Crown Store after the sale event is over and should be present in time for when the bonus items arrive via in-game mail.

NOTE: Though the Display Cases are NOT Ultra-Rares, we will be including another bonus item in this round: every Ultra-Rare Doll will be delivered with a Macabre Doll Display Case!

 

Infrastructure as well as Patching, Patching, and More Patching

This month Unity advised that there was an exploit found that affected any applications built on Unity 2017.1 or later. Unity created a patching tool and advised that if developers used certain commandline options or changed the path of certain directories within the build, then they needed to rebuild all of their software and publish a patch.

Even though Shroud of the Avatar has not utilized any of the methods or commandline options that Unity has identified as putting Unity applications at risk, we have incorporated the patcher into our build environment. We have directly patched our Unity build servers and, even so, we are still running the patcher to verify that the files affected are marked as already patched during the builds.

The patch utility has been updated by Unity a number of times in the last 20+ days, twice in the last 10 days alone, and we have updated our patcher to stay current and ensure that if the patch ever needs to be updated that our build process will handle it automatically. If there’s interest in going down the rabbit hole, here is a link to the document outlining when the issue was discovered.

These things always happen when we have lots of stuff planned. We were scheduled to migrate two servers to a new machine in the Austin datacenter but this was held off to ensure that we didn’t have any additional risk while we altered the build processes and continued to develop for the month. We are currently planning to deploy the new server next week with a few of the roles that we use to develop and maintain the game. We will schedule a maintenance window to migrate anything intrusive to the game. (Watch the forums and the in-game message of the day for more information when we establish our timeframe.)

If all goes well, this will be one of multiple server migrations we will need to do over the coming months. Each will likely require downtime to allow for a smooth cutover. The new equipment and software will be staged ahead of time. We will migrate non-production aspects first (like the QA server) to allow for some burn-in.

We have been working diligently to get to this point and we plan to continue into 2026 with more hardware and software updates!

Release 143 Patch Notes

Below are a list of the updates that are live as of Release 143 in the game of Shroud of the Avatar! Polish, additional improvements, and bug fixes are inbound for R144 next month. We hope you enjoy the changes that are live today as of Release 143!

Crafting, Decoration, Gear, & Inventory Item Changes:

  • A recipe for for a Tub of Floating Apples has been added to decoration merchants in Verdantis. SOTA-72737
  • Increased the available scaling range on large and large ornate cushions, which should fit nicely in a Fine Display Case.
  • Fixed Big Blue Box Disease for the Fall Teleporter.
  • Fixed Big Blue Box Disease for the Lost Vale Teleporter. SOTA-72728
  • Added distance culling for several previous years’ Cornucopia.
  • Haunted Dolls can now be heard again! Maybe it was better when they were muted, they were a bit less scary then. They also can now be selected for pick-up or activation easier, which will come in handy when they are just too scary for their own good. SOTA-70046

User Interface, Store Information, Inky, & Lua Changes:

  • Updated the store descriptions for the Resurrection Ankhs and Chaoses to include that they can be placed on lots, in basements, in player dungeons, and in player-owned towns.
  • Fixed the store category assignment for Open Book Patterns.
  • Fixed the store category assignment for the two Gothic Wall Mirrors, which are NOT outdoor deco.
  • Fixed the store shelf names for the 2025 Halloween Gift Boxes.

World and Quest Changes:

  • Seasonal Monsters: Pumpkin Head has had enough of terrorizing Drachvald for the year and Krampus will return to East Sanctus Forest and some Snowy Mountain Road Encounters on November 16th.
  • Aerie: Updated the collision shape on shield wall decorations used in several NPC building templates. SOTA-72701
  • Ardoris: Rotated two sigil plaques in the carpentry shop so they lie flat against their respective walls. SOTA-72724
  • The Breach: Changed spelling of “Central Pavilion” to adhere to modern English standards.
  • Equitas Passage: Placed an extra rock in a stuck spot. SOTA-72696
  • Harvest: Fixed typos in one of Torben’s responses. SOTA-72712
  • Kobold Expeditionary Camp: Updated quest compass markers. Fixed an issue that caused the wave battle to not trigger. SOTA-72719
  • Middle Downs: Adjusted a stone wall and surrounding terrain to prevent players from getting stuck. SOTA-72691
  • Oracle Colossus: Placed rocks in a pair of stuck spots. SOTA-72694
  • Port Harmony: Fixed a typo in a “rumors” response for Annora Jenkins in which she referenced Minister Sallow instead of Minister Greenwell. SOTA-72752
  • Port Harmony: Removed a wayward collider from below the lion head spouts in the canals. SOTA-72717
  • South Midmaer Way and Lamech’s Bazaar: Simplified a pile of crates within the airship to prevent players getting stuck. SOTA-72715
  • Snowy Mountain Road Encounter and Troll’s Bridge: Dropped a rock into a stuck spot. SOTA-72720
  • Storms Reach: Fixed typos in Grigor’s dialog. SOTA-72711

Player-Owned Town Changes:

  • Castle Atos: Fixed this non-standard POT scene so it works properly as a POT.
  • Cassiopeia: Upgraded to Town from Crossroads Village.
  • Lightbringer Retreat: Upgraded to Metropolis from Village.

Player-Owned Dungeon and Basement Changes:

  • Adventurers with a bad sense of direction will no longer get set on fire in the Blackblade Pass Player Dungeon Lava Grotto, unless they fall in. SOTA-72654

Bug Brigade & Testing Directives!

The Bug Brigade was established to improve how the community and the development team work together to improve the game. Since the Brigade’s inception, the program has gone through a number of changes and was eventually placed on hold. The stability of the game is as important to the development team as it is to the players, therefore the program was revamped and was relaunched.

The Brigade has been up and running and the volunteers (Alley Oop, Echondas, Flair Minamoto, and Justyn) are in a good rhythm for verifying and submitting bugs to the developers. If you have reported a bug that has not yet been addressed, please be patient while the backlog is being worked. The Brigade is working diligently to clean up the backlog of bug reports posted by players on the forums.

Every month, a considerable amount of development time will be spent working many of the verified bugs which have been submitted to the team by the Bug Brigade. This focused effort on bug fixes would not be possible without the recent efforts of the Bug Brigade. Please take the time to thank these bug hunting aficionados when you encounter them in your travels!

In turn, the development team would like to express a big thank you to the Bug Hunters! These community members are doing a fantastic job bringing so many bug reports to the team, and they’re doing it in a way which makes the process smooth and efficient. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Much improvement has been noticed by the development team and we’re so very excited to see the program’s continued success!

The development team would also like to thank all of those who take time to participate in QA Testing Directives. Thanks to your hard work and dedication, many issues and bugs can be identified and fixed prior to content going to the Live Server! Keep up the great work! Streaming Program

Streamers of Shroud of the Avatar can participate in a program to showcase the game and be rewarded for their efforts. Any player in good standing who wishes to be included in the Streaming Program can contact Laney via in-game mail with their Character Name and Twitch Channel information. If you have already signed up for the program in the past, fear not: you’re on the list and you don’t need to reapply.

Streaming Rewards Program participants must adhere to our Terms of Service (TOS) and Community Rules while Streaming Shroud of the Avatar.

Streaming Rewards Program participants must stream at least 10 hours of Shroud of the Avatar ACTIVE game play to remain in the program with reward accrual.

Streamers will receive a one-time digital reward of in-game items after meeting the program’s requirements: Streamer’s Cloak, Streamer’s Camera, and the LIVESTREAMING title.

Rules:

  • To qualify for Streaming Rewards, each streamer must continue to meet the minimum requirements for 60 days after application.
  • To accrue additional rewards, Streamers must stream SotA a minimum of 10 hours per month, tallied on the 1st day of each month, to remain in the program.

Monthly Streaming Bundles:

On the 1st of each month, qualifying streamers will be eligible to receive 50 Streaming Bundles. Bundles will be sent out to Streamers via in-game mail.

A few things you need to know:

  • Streaming Bundles are intended to be given away to stream viewers, not consumed by the streamer.
  • Streamers are not allowed to put paywalls in place for the Streaming Bundles. (For example, giving away Streaming Bundles once the stream reaches a certain number of bits, subscriptions, or donations).

Other Items of Note:

  • Streamers in the program will be included in the SotAbot StreamPop function, appearing in the player-streaming channel in Discord.
  • An optional fan graphics kit is available to the participating streamers as well as all players of Shroud of the Avatar, which includes graphics, overlays and other material.
  • Streamers must be actively playing the game during their streams. Being away from the keyboard (AFK) for short periods is acceptable. If Twitch indicates the streamer is playing SotA but they are streaming other content or a timeout/login screen, they risk being removed from the program.

Community Events & Resources

Greetings event holders and event attendees! So many fun and exciting events are available in the upcoming weeks. Be sure to get out there and participate, make some new friends, perhaps make some great emote, recipe, or gear trades, or get some adventuring and role-playing into your mix! Here are spotlighted events or updated community resources that we’ve noticed popping up lately on the official forums.

Recurring Events:

  • Lightbringer Isle Auction: This newly-resumed auction will be held by Hemnu Lightbringer the Sunday after each Release at 2000 EST / 1900 CST / 0100 BST / 2400 UTC.
  • The Nebula Time Trials are intended as a fun competition amongst players, but also a way for players to compare builds, playstyles, learn from one another and just generally have fun together. Each trial will consist of a challenge along the lines of “kill this mob” or “complete this quest” and while prizes will be awarded based on completion time, everyone who enters will receive something. Check this main post for links to the individual trials as they occur.
  • Monthly Release Fishing Contests: This is a rotating, multi-location contest sponsored and organised by Rajazel, The Town Museum and its Governor Diablotine.
  • Mad Splatter Tea Party: One Sunday of each quarter, Lily Byrd hosts a tea party in her back garden at her home in Jade Valley. There are drinks and eats, there is sometimes music, there are often party games with prizes, and sometimes they just sit and talk about life in Novia. All are welcome to join but this is a role playing event tea party: please come as your avatar!

Community Calendars:

  • Avatars Radio Calendar: Just when are all those talented DJ’s and streamers broadcasting? Don’t just guess, check out there very helpful calendar! Never again will you wonder when’s the best time to tune in!
  • NBNN Calendar: This calendar provides a great schedule for NBNN and WRFB programing as well as many other community events. If you’re a fan of the Laz & Jack show or even if you’re hoping to catch them in action for the first time, this is the calendar for you!

Community Event Resources: Here are some fantastic resources for tracking down community events or posting your own events. Become involved! Create! Explore! Make friends! But most of all, have fun!

  • One-Time Community Events Forum: Sometimes events happen only a single time, so you’ll not want to miss out on these events as they occur. Check out the forums routinely to spot these!
  • Recurring Community Events Forum: Some events occur on weekly or monthly schedules which are a great way to routinely meet up with friends and to make new ones. Be sure to check this forum frequently for new events or time changes to existing ones.
  • Player Event Trophies and Special Item Requests: Would you like to request a special trophy or renamed item for a player event you’ve created? Head on over to this thread to see what’s available and to obtain more information about request procedures.
