Release 149 goes live April 29th at 10:30 AM CDT.

Welcome! The Catnip Games development team marks this monthly release of Shroud of the Avatar with new content and improvements. For Release 149 (R149), we offer growing things that are, unfortunately, flammable.

For those wishing to participate in any community activities, upcoming one-time and recurring community events have been announced! Be sure to also review the Player Guide and Known Issues for additional information on recent changes and upcoming fixes.

Player Dungeon Fire Elemental Rooms Now Spawning

With this release, we have added three spawned versions of player dungeon lava fishing rooms. This includes the Ancient Stone Lava Fishing Grotto, the Ancient Stone Large Lava Fishing Room, and the Cave Stone Room Lava Grotto (Blackblade Pass room.)

In each of these rooms, you will find a Fire Elemental totem pedestal at Connection One. Currently, there is a known bug where the fire elemental totem visual does not align with the transparent statue slot when placed, but the visual does re-align itself on the next scene-load. We will have the kobolds who sold us the mechanism for this look into why that is occurring.

The range of Fire Elemental mob tiers has been expanded to allow for a more varying population to battle. Currently, the new mobs are only present in these player dungeon rooms, though you may see them appear in Adventure Zones at some point in the future. Did you know? Fire Elementals and Lava Golems have something of an alliance, so you may see one or two Lava Golems in your campaign.

The spawning versions are an added feature of the decoable versions of these lava fishing rooms, two of which are in the Crown Store and the third of which is craftable. If you are already in possession of one of these rooms, you will be able to convert it to a spawning version by using the standard recipe: the deco version of the room, an ancient essence, and a stone chisel on a smelting station. Please note that the existing room will have to be removed from the dungeon in order to convert them. If you do not yet have one of these three rooms, they can be obtained in the Crown Store or a blueprint can drop in Blackblade Pass (which is less convenient but probably more fun.)

As I have done in the past, the footprint of the rooms changes when they are spawnable. For today’s release, two of the three rooms have new areas from which the mob command staff may be plotting against you. The third will get the expansion treatment in a future release. I have made an effort to keep the existing void displacement the same for these changes so the spawnable versions can fit in the same footprint as the deco versions.

NOTE: Removing a dungeon room from an active player dungeon without having a secondary path back to the foyer will result in the collapse of any sections beyond the room being removed! We strongly suggest using the Player Test Environment on our QA Server to try swapping out an existing room before attempting it on the live game server.

The descriptions in the Crown Store will be updated in R149 Patch 1 to detail these new features.

Doors to Dungeons and Basements

We have (at long last) created a basement door pattern that can be applied to the Basement Hatch Teleporter and then attached to a wall inside or outside your house! What? no, we didn’t forget about Dungeon Entrances; There is a dungeon entrance pattern available as well that, once applied to a Dungeon Entrance Teleporter, will act in the same way.

Both of these doors are a bit more subtle than past versions of the teleporters: no blue swirly VFX to be found! The basement door is completely unassuming, with no pulsing or sparkles of any kind. The dungeon version has a slight pulse of the door’s wood color, but nothing more.

We will be coming out with additional patterns utilizing the various doors in the game in future releases to match the various home styles. Yes, of course there will be a craftable version as well.

Aggro-Culture Exploit!

There is an agriculture exploit where planting pots are overlapped to allow more plants to be grown than are intended in a given space. This exploit has been on the list of things to correct for some time, but previous attempts by multiple devs were unsuccessful. Recently, a player posted in the forums noting an operational impact to harvesting these overlapping pots which led us to re-re-approach this issue, this time with success.

We have the fix, we have tested it, and we have withheld it for this release to provide players some time to clean up their planting areas. Once the fix is put in place, players will no longer be able to plant in any planter that is overlapping another. We recommend harvesting the current crop cycle and then ensuring the planters are not overlapping for the next planting.

We will be putting this on QA for player testing access prior to the end of the Release 150 development sprint. We are taking great care to guard against edge cases where pots left in an overlapping state could not be watered or harvested. We strongly encourage players to log into the QA server during the testing directive for this change to make sure no issues are seen. We also strongly suggest de-nesting planters on the live server before the R150 patch goes into place.

Release 149 Patch Notes

Below are a list of the updates that are live as of Release 149 in the game of Shroud of the Avatar! Polish, additional improvements, and bug fixes are inbound for R150 next month. We hope you enjoy the changes that are live today as of Release 149!

Crafting, Decoration, Gear, & Inventory Item Changes:

Seeds for White Rose Bushes can now be found on all florists and those farmers that carry rose seeds.
Recipes for a White Rose Bouquet and a White Rose Arrangement can now be found on all florists. SOTA-72915
Recipes for a Perennial Coast Gazebo and Perennial Coast Guard Tower have been added to Ingvar the Carpenter in Ardoris. SOTA-72910
A recipe for a Hanging Potted White Flowering Azalea decoration has been added to housing decoration merchants in Verdantis. SOTA-72443
Audited all houses and made sure that their windows are set to let light through them. Tickets remain open for the six houses that will need mesh work to fix their windows as well as for the ones with muntins that aren’t casting shadows. SOTA-72949
Haunted dolls will no longer invoke a jump-scare if players get too close to them.
Adjusted the carrots used for grown plant display so that active pots and beds of mature carrots can be picked up and re-placed without the root interfering. SOTA-68833
Changed the appearance of the existing Fancy Vase of White Roses to match the new bushes.
Improved appearance of the billboards for all deco rose bushes and adjusted their distance culling as well as the distance culling for all azalea bushes and vases of tulips.

Combat & Skill Changes:

Air Elementals’ default attack is now named shock and shows a lightning debuff icon. SOTA-72919
Roots from Flesh Flayers will now show the correct root debuff icon. SOTA-72920
Potions of Green Growth will no longer work in NPC towns. SOTA-71556
Fixed capitalization in tooltips for the various Blessings of Atos.

World and Quest Changes:

The Arch Lapin will go dormant and the Luminous Atavist will return on May 16th.
Aether Dragons, Aether Liches, and Aether Corpions will awake in their respective stomping grounds as the two-tailed comet comes within range of the world on May 27th. Aether Tetras will take a couple more days to stretch their fins.
Fixed a crate of invisible onions everywhere they appeared in the world. …and yet somehow you could still be busted for stealing them.
Approach to the Shuttered Eye: Fixed a stuck spot. SOTA-72826
Brittany Estates: Fixed a stuck spot. SOTA-72925
Celestis: Removed redundant floors and railings from the Sequanna Pagoda.
Lamech’s Bazaar and South Midmaer Way: Fixed a stuck spot. SOTA-72958

Bug Brigade & Testing Directives!

The Bug Brigade was established to improve how the community and the development team work together to improve the game. Since the Brigade’s inception, the program has gone through a number of changes and was eventually placed on hold. The stability of the game is as important to the development team as it is to the players, therefore the program was revamped and was relaunched.

The Brigade has been up and running and the volunteers (Alley Oop, Echondas, Flair Minamoto, and Justyn) are in a good rhythm for verifying and submitting bugs to the developers. If you have reported a bug that has not yet been addressed, please be patient while the backlog is being worked. The Brigade is working diligently to clean up the backlog of bug reports posted by players on the forums.

Every month, a considerable amount of development time will be spent working many of the verified bugs which have been submitted to the team by the Bug Brigade. This focused effort on bug fixes would not be possible without the recent efforts of the Bug Brigade. Please take the time to thank these bug hunting aficionados when you encounter them in your travels!

In turn, the development team would like to express a big thank you to the Bug Hunters! These community members are doing a fantastic job bringing so many bug reports to the team, and they’re doing it in a way which makes the process smooth and efficient. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Much improvement has been noticed by the development team and we’re so very excited to see the program’s continued success!

The development team would also like to thank all of those who take time to participate in QA Testing Directives. Thanks to your hard work and dedication, many issues and bugs can be identified and fixed prior to content going to the Live Server! Keep up the great work! Streaming Program

Streamers of Shroud of the Avatar can participate in a program to showcase the game and be rewarded for their efforts. Any player in good standing who wishes to be included in the Streaming Program can contact Laney via in-game mail with their Character Name and Twitch Channel information. If you have already signed up for the program in the past, fear not: you’re on the list and you don’t need to reapply.

Streaming Rewards Program participants must adhere to our Terms of Service (TOS) and Community Rules while Streaming Shroud of the Avatar.

Streaming Rewards Program participants must stream at least 10 hours of Shroud of the Avatar ACTIVE game play to remain in the program with reward accrual.

Streamers will receive a one-time digital reward of in-game items after meeting the program’s requirements: Streamer’s Cloak, Streamer’s Camera, and the LIVESTREAMING title.

Rules:

To qualify for Streaming Rewards, each streamer must continue to meet the minimum requirements for 60 days after application.
To accrue additional rewards, Streamers must stream SotA a minimum of 10 hours per month, tallied on the 1^st day of each month, to remain in the program.

Monthly Streaming Bundles:

On the 1st of each month, qualifying streamers will be eligible to receive 50 Streaming Bundles. Bundles will be sent out to Streamers via in-game mail.

A few things you need to know:

Streaming Bundles are intended to be given away to stream viewers, not consumed by the streamer.
Streamers are not allowed to put paywalls in place for the Streaming Bundles. (For example, giving away Streaming Bundles once the stream reaches a certain number of bits, subscriptions, or donations).

Other Items of Note:

Streamers in the program will be included in the SotAbot StreamPop function, appearing in the player-streaming channel in Discord.
An optional fan graphics kit is available to the participating streamers as well as all players of Shroud of the Avatar, which includes graphics, overlays and other material.
Streamers must be actively playing the game during their streams. Being away from the keyboard (AFK) for short periods is acceptable. If Twitch indicates the streamer is playing SotA but they are streaming other content or a timeout/login screen, they risk being removed from the program.

Greetings event holders and event attendees! So many fun and exciting events are available in the upcoming weeks. Be sure to get out there and participate, make some new friends, perhaps make some great emote, recipe, or gear trades, or get some adventuring and role-playing into your mix! Recurring Events:

Lightbringer Isle Auction: This newly-resumed auction will be held by Hemnu Lightbringer the Sunday after each Release at 2000 EST / 1900 CST / 0100 BST / 2400 UTC.
The Nebula Time Trials are intended as a fun competition amongst players, but also a way for players to compare builds, playstyles, learn from one another and just generally have fun together. Each trial will consist of a challenge along the lines of “kill this mob” or “complete this quest” and while prizes will be awarded based on completion time, everyone who enters will receive something. Check this main post for links to the individual trials as they occur.
Monthly Release Fishing Contests: This is a rotating, multi-location contest sponsored and organised by Rajazel, The Town Museum and its Governor Diablotine.
Mad Splatter Tea Party: One Sunday of each quarter, Lily Byrd hosts a tea party in her back garden at her home in Jade Valley. There are drinks and eats, there is sometimes music, there are often party games with prizes, and sometimes they just sit and talk about life in Novia. All are welcome to join but this is a role playing event tea party: please come as your avatar!

Avatars Radio Calendar: Just when are all those talented DJ’s and streamers broadcasting? Don’t just guess, check out there very helpful calendar! Never again will you wonder when’s the best time to tune in!
NBNN Calendar: This calendar provides a great schedule for NBNN and WRFB programing as well as many other community events. If you’re a fan of the Laz & Jack show or even if you’re hoping to catch them in action for the first time, this is the calendar for you!
