Paypal and a Question of Virtue

Happy Saturday!

We’ve got some great news for everyone who has requested a way to use PayPal to help support our Shroud of the Avatar Project!  You now have the ability to do so by visiting  www.shroudoftheavatar.com.

The tier rewards are identical both on our Kickstarter and at our Shroud of the Avatar store. It is simply an alternative that will allow new backers to pledge using Paypal as a payment option.

We also have a short video where Richard “Lord British” takes one of our programmers through the same process he was inspired by to eventually evaluate player virtues in his Ultima games, using a set of questions. We want to know how you would answer those same questions!  If this video makes it past 25000 views we’ll post Richard’s answers in a future update!”

Also, for those Reddit fans out there, Richard “Lord British” Garriott will be hosting a IamA session on March 25th at 4 pm CST.  Be sure to join him at www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/ with your questions about Shroud of the Avatar!

    Worst:
1.) Olive Oyl – We know what you are and what your price was. The situation wasn’t even life or death. Maybe Popeye will come to you, or perhaps you could get across another way.
2.) Brutus [Bluto] – the slimy one
3.) Chris – for not understanding Popeye’s anger
4.) Wimpy – for not being helpful; he didn’t even have a good reason
5.) Popeye – Perhaps he got too mad when he should have known that Olive Oyl is not too smart, and Brutus is not nice?

I loved doing the gypsy questions in the ultima games.. was so fun to think about the answers :)
    best to worst for me:
    1. Olive (she just wanted to see popeye, and it was the only option or she would never see him. she tried looking for another way)
    2. Brutus (he had a boat and just wanted something and said what he wanted)
    3. Chris (he defended Olive cos he thought she was wronged)
    4. Popeye (spurned Olive after she did everything she could to see him
    5. Wimpy (had a boat but wouldn’t help)

    In order, best to worst:
    Popeye
His only real crime is a lack of forgiveness.
    Chris
While his righteous anger for his friend is understandable, as it arises from his care for his friend, his action isn’t really justified and is excessive.

    Olive Oyl
her basic flaw is her weakness and imprudence, which pushes her to her crime. She gives in to Brutus for convenience, not because all possibilities have been exhausted. Stealing a boat is one possibility within the scenario. Much less building bridges, or going up- or downstream. Her confession helps alleviate her crime, but not really enough to change her relative position.

    Wendy
if she hadn’t known the consequences, she’d merely be guilty of not helping a friend, despite the outcomes. If she had helped, the story would end well. Instead she makes the key decision that dooms them all to tragedy.

    Brutus
His initial response is to take advantage of Olive’s desperation and weakness, and make her betray Popeye’s love and trust in her.

All of this predicated on the assumption that Popeye and Olive have the expectation of a faithful monogamous relationship, but aren’t in one yet. Change that assumption, and the rankings change.

    Best to Worst.
1:)Brutus~His boat he named a price, no one is entited to his stuff and that was his price. No one put a gun to Olive and say you must go today.
2:)Popeye~Every right to be angry, and am sure in time he will forgive her.
3:)Chris~Should have understood Popeyes anger but then maybe Olive didn’t tell him everything.
4:)Wimpy~having a boat and no reason not to use it. If he had given a valid reason..like buy the gas or something maybe I would think better of him.
5:)Olive~No one put a gun to her head, she could have called Popeye and asked him to come to her or asked for a ride from someone else…maybe a local ferry or boat rental. Personally I think she really wanted to get with Brutus.

I didn’t like the gypsy questions because I wanted to play a mage character and had to choose answers I wouldn’t normally choose JUST to get to play that type of character. Otherwise, the questions are always tough and interesting to answer.

    Best to worst:
    1) Popeye: His anger is completely understandable. If Olive truly loved him, she would have found another way, sent him a message or simply not gone out of love because the price was too high.
    2) Wimpy: he is just a wimp and not doing anything is the best he was capable of.
    3) Chris: He gets a few points for sticking up for Olive’s honor, even though she didn’t deserve it. Maybe Olive should have gone to him first and together they could have figured out a way to get her across.
4-5) Olive and Brutus are equally as bad. Olive should have cared more for her honor and should have been wise enough to know that Popeye wouldn’t want her anymore if she slept with another man. Brutus was just a guy trying to get laid and found an easy mark. If he had an ounce of decency in his body, he would have taken her across for nothing or asked for payment when she could afford it or gotten payment from Popeye who would have happily paid money for his trouble.

1 – Brutus: took advantage of the weak
2 – Popeye: blind to sacrifice
    3 – Wimpy: Indifference
4 – Chris: slave to emotions
5 – Olive: victim, self sacrificed.

  7. theUnwisetheUnwise

    Best to worst,
Popeye- even tho he should have ate spinach and swam across he still deserve loyalty.
    Chris- defending a hurt friend
    Brutus- wanting pay for services
Wimpy-scared and protecting his own skin
    Olive-disloyal and uninventive

  8. Kyd

Best to worst in a timebased order of doing the wrong thing. The person acting last, is the most guilty for the escalation of the story:
    Brutus
    Wimpy
    Olive
    Popeye
    Chris

  9. PillowofSoft

    Worst to best:
Brutus :- his actions start the whole ball rolling and taking advantage of the situation in such a manner is reprehensible.
Chris:- not his fight not his issue, Popeye has the right to be upset and entitled to his opinion. Chris’s actions change nothing it is just violence for violence sake.
Wimpy:- if you’re not part of the solution you’re part of the problem. Inaction can be as damaging as action.
Olive oil:- just wanted to see Popeye but made a decision for two people not just herself
Popeye:- can feel whatever he wishes it is his right.

From worst deed to least worst deed
    1. Brutis – Creator of the proposition deed
    2. Olive – Accepted the proposition deed
    3. Whimpy – Refusal to engage in getting a better resolution.
4 Popeye – Refusal to forgive
    5. (Player) Chris – Is the victim of circumstances in the Popeye cartoon story. Who is Chris anyways, I never seen a Chris in any Popeye cartoons. All I see is develop story and add Chris.

I tried to give this an Ultima feel and style.
Worst deed- Brutus’ Request. I feel this is the worst because he uses her situation to get something out of her. Brutus chose selfishness over kindness.
    2. Popeye turning his back on her. With this one he holds something against her that despite the fact she didn’t want to and originally did say no to he turned his back on her, knowing that what she did hurt her. Popeye chose anger over sympathy and compassion.
    3. Chris beating up Popeye. That wouldn’t or didn’t really accomplish anything other than Chris having a false sense of pride. Chris showed violence instead of wisdom.
    4. Olive sleeping with Brutus. She made a hasty decision, if she had taken time to think about it, or maybe the river was only so treacherous at certain times of the year, maybe Popeye or she could have acquired a boat themselves. Many things could have changed the need for her to do what she did. Olive chose desire over patience.
    5. Whimpy saying no. He gave the situation no thought, he just did what he wanted to even though he knew of her situation. Whimpy chose ignorance over consideration.
Best deed- Olive confessing her action. Doing something like that takes a lot of strength and courage on her part. She doesn’t know how Popeye will react but instead of living on a lie haunting her she takes hope that he will understand and love her. Olive chose honesty over deception.

I really hope to get to see Lord Britishes!

  12. NiobeNiobe

    Best to worst:

    – Brutus: He just followes his nature, as men sometimes does.
    – Olive: Her only mistake was, to tell Popeye the truth. Would have avoid all this trouble, if she has kept her ‘little secret’.
    – Chris: He knocked Popeye down, but what was in his mind? To get some good points in his relation to Olive?
    – Popeye: He acts like a fool. Olive should look for someone better.
    – Whimpy: He is the worst, cause he could have helpt, but he didn’t. To do nothing just to get out of trouble is the worst thing one can do.

  13. Montesquieu Paine

    Most worst to least worst:

Wimpy: Refuses to help or become involved; might as well be dead.
Chris: Adds to the misery with violence which does nothing positive; no change is implied either to Popeye or Brutus.
Popeye: Stays true to his ideal but at the cost of despising the sacrifice of another; and punishes both himself and Olive Oyl (but not Brutus).
Brutus: Advances the goal of another but only with a real cost to two other parties, but does not force the choice taken.
Olive Oyl: Accepts a sacrifice (and some risk) to advance positive goal of both herself and another person.
